I've done it a few times...... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Front Struts 2001 Aero, saabsince 93b ![]() ![]() |
I did it a couple of times on my 2000 9-5 and more recently on my 2007 9-5.
It's not a difficult job for a DIYer. But, certain tools are a must.
1. Spring compressor
2. 1/2" drive impact wrench and a 21-22mm socket for the nut at the top of the strut.
3. Jack stands
4. Hydraulic floor jack...nice to have.
5. Bottle hydraulic jack...I use this when reinstalling the new strut to jack up the lower A-frame so that the upper three strut bolts are easier to reinstall. I install the lower 2 strut bolts first.
* The upper bearing may not need replacement.
* Both front wheels must be off the ground in order to eliminate the stress on the strut and to remove it.
* If the lower strut bolts (2 per side) have a head that is flat on 2 sides and rounded on the other 2 DO NOT PUT A WRENCH ON THEM! They have splined shafts. Remove the nut and tap them out with a hammer. I always remove the upper 3 bolts at the top of the strut tower first.
* Go light when you reinstall the upper 3 bolts at the top of the strut tower; they strip easily.
* The upper 3 bolts at the top of the strut tower have asymmetrical spacing. Use a felt-tipped pen to mark the position of the strut bearing plate.
* Don't be surprised if you find that the sway bar links are worn.
Good luck,
