Several questions have been raised which I'll try to answer. As always, there may be alternative answers that work for you.
1. Why an impact wrench? Removal of the big nut at the top of the strut (only with the spring in a compressed state). Alternatively, this can be done with a combination of a deep well socket and a long T-50 torx bit or allen wrench. Holding the strut shaft with a big pair of channel locks can also work. 15 seconds with the impact wrench will convince you. Also, the impact wrench makes a lot of other things very easy.
2. Assessing the upper bearing: Browish goo, blackish goo, dry, it feels gritty when you turn it in your hand or it falls apart upon removal. A new one feels like you're turning it in thick clean goo (bluish in color). Given the cost (low) there is merit to replacement while everything is apart.
3. Reference to sway bar links (not bushes): These are the 8" - 10" long liks that connect the tab on the lower end of the strut to the end of the sway bar. These can be replaced separately from the strut replacement....but you you must have both front wheels off the ground while you do it.
4. Why struts on a 2007 9-5 (25K miles)? Upgrade to Koni FSD's
