Celebrated a rained out independence day finishing up thre last bits of my project(and no left over bolts or parts!)... low and behold as the City fireworks were starting to fly, so was my car.. and my baby runs again! Before starting turned the motor over several times with fuel pump fuse out and DIC upplugged to get oil through the system and after all said and done and reconnected, she started right up after.. made a very loud clicking and clacking from valve train/tappetts as I idled it a few times checking things out, but the extreme noise slowly went away.. all but one or two very loud stubborn ones.. thought my next project may be pulling cams out and replacing several tappets (still may be?) but took it for a couple somewhat spirited rides and seems to have quieted down substantially.. there may be a bit more clicking noise that I want or should be there, but the top end and timing case area are substantially quieter and slight clicking noise does not seem that bad and barely noticeable with hood down, I'll keep an eye/ear on it as I do more test runs hoping it will quiet down more.. or not?..
I ran straight distilled water through it at first and got it up to temp and flushed it after knowing I still had some stop leak crap in there from my winter new bolts/retorque/headgasket repair job.. water was quite crappy looking and glad I somewhat flushed it..
Balance chain?? what stinkin balance chain??!! the motor is much smoother and quieter now with it out?? It was extremely worn as I posted before and perhaps was either throwing balance off due to this wear or my completely toasted motor mounts were the culprit of my old vibrator mobile, but I certainly won't miss having a balance chain whatsoever as she seems to run soooo smooooth now.. so for anyone worried about ending up with a mobile milkshake machine due to removing a balance chain that is definitely toasted, as I initialy was.. I would not hesitate
It feels like she pulls smooth and strong and I think I can feel the TD04 working.. no boost guage to look at and never had a working turbo car (my original Garret was so toasted I don't think it worked from day one?) so hard to tell when/if it kicks in as when I stomp on it the tranny downshifts, but she pulls nicely and climbs fast in the 40 mph and over range and seems too pull much better than before.. haven't stomped on it from a start to see if/how it lags on low end as folks say the TD 04 does, but if all continues to run well, (knocking on many wood products here!)I may opt to get an Aero ECU married to my car or get mine flashed or whatever that process is (I'm clueless when it comes to this part??) and install a boost guage.. Is any method preferrable over the other i.e Aero ECU or get mine reprogrammed?
Going out to take another look for leaks and check fluids and button up the remaining pieces, side and bottom shrouds and try and resecure/reinstall fog lights that were just hanging there.. then will tackle my passenger side window rollers that I have had since winter, will be nice to be able to open that window again... driver side was a breeze when I did it.. after that will give her a much needed inside and out clean job and I will have my nice driver back in action.. not that I still don't have a few other quirks to work out, SID repair for one :( but am happy this major project it done and and will be praying to the car gods to spare me for a while and hold off with my next SAAB plague... at least for a while... my next planned repair will be my code 8 repair job.. not sure if will go with one piece repair kit or just get the new Saab part arm? opinions from been there done that folks?
Thanks for all who responded to my many long posts for help.. you helped me greatly navigate through many obsticals and get the jod done what I hope to be correctly.. I think I must saved at least $1K in labor with all the work I did in addition to the turbo and head gasket job..
Thanks and I think it'ds safe to say...
I'll be baaaack!!! :-)~
