SAABNet's 9-5 info page indicates the fuel requirement of 87-93 AON and 92-93 AON recommended for Arc & Aero. I don't know how AON equates to the RON on US pumps.
The excellent gas mileage of the Aero (EPA 20/28 auto) is nice selling point, but if 93 octane gas is needed to get top performance, this changes the economics some.
If the Linear doesn't "need" 92-93, then I'm assuming that it makes 185hp and 207 ft-lb with 91, maybe something less with 89 and maybe less yet with 87. I'm also assuming that the Aero "needs" 92-93 for 250 hp and 258 ft-lb. If I'm only putting 91 octane in the Aero, is it close to Linear performance?
If the Linear makes it's advertised perfomance at 87, and the Aero needs 93, then the "equivalent gas mileage expense" for the Aero (with 87 at current $1.35 and 93 at $1.55) is 17.4 city, 24.4 highway. Granted, as long as the cost differential between the different octanes remains constant, if gas gets over $2.00/gallon, the economics reduce, but if it gets back to $1.00, the difference is significant.
Disclaimer 1: I realize that this apparent gas mileage is only at my pocketbook, and I consider myself a tree-hugger who factors gas mileage into consideration for it's environmental impact.
Disclaimer 2: To our neighbors in other countries, yes the US's gas prices are ridiculusly low and don't reflect the true cost (environmental and human health, national defense issues) of gas consumption, and we are basically a bunch of whiners about our gas prices.
