I may be in the minority here, but I don't feel that using the filter size specified by the manufacturer (i.e. the "small" filter) is a bad thing. Far, far more important is the quality of oil you use, and the frequency of oil and filter changes.
A long time ago, Saab switched filter sizes. The old ones were - to use an approximate analogy - about the size of a 12oz coffee "mug", while the new ones (the ones they sell now) are about the size of an 8oz coffee "cup" (both were approximately the same length, with the older filter having a larger diameter outside of the seal ring). The older size was also available (not from Saab) in a "double length" used on some Fords, if I recall. But those would not fit on most Saabs, especially 99s or 900s.
In all those years, I never felt that the smaller filter was inadequate to the task. Change your oil & filter regularly (no LESS than the Saab recommended interval), use quality oils & filters (Saab, Mann, Mobil 1, etc.) and you'll be fine.
