Your main complaint is noise, not ride/ handling-right? Consider other sources of noise than struts- This seems to be an increasingly popular complaint and several other writers here have described their experience with replacing the rubber squishy parts and reporting success.

For no other reason than having 130 k miles, I replaced my struts with stock about 3 months ago. The upper bearings were just fine. The ride/ handling is not changed.

If you just gotta do it anyway- you can get the top nut off by using a socket (22 mm?) held with a pipe wrench allowing you to get a purchase on the strut shaft with a hex key put through the hole in the socket where you usually put the ratchet. Does that make sense?
