Battery Weirdness..Alternator?

Hey all, it's been awhile, but my work unblocked saabnet finally...
Battery's about 2 years old (alternator less than that), and I've been taking lots of very short trips, so I've ended up with a dead battery a couple times. I threw the charger on it about once a week without too much problem.
Drove about 2 hours back home Sunday night and close to the end of the trip it acted as if the alternator wasn't working. It was in extremely heavy traffic. Lights dimming when there's load, some electrical weirdness.
I parked it on the street in NYC to pick the kid up from the inlaws, and it didn't start -- flat battery. The doorman jumped it and I got home fine, but with the same dimming and weirdness. But I got there, another 30 minutes, so the alternator must be working. It also cranked very slow when I tried it again at home so it was getting a little juice.
Charged it again so I could get out to pick up a new battery, but I left the old one in figuring it would give me 2 or 3 starts and die and I'd know for sure (then I could switch them and get on with my life).
But it hasn't died yet, with multiple short trips.
I'm using a smart charger, is it possible that it's bringing the battery back from the dead (a feat billed as a 'feature' on the box)? Or should I be looking at the alternator, too?
Thanks,
