for any stray AC voltage on the line. With the engine turning, you should get very minimal AC volts on the line (under 0.5). Just hook up a Digital multi meter (DMM) to the battery terminals, and switch to AC volts from DC volts.
Sometimes, one or more of the diodes in the alternator go bad, and more AC voltage leaks out onto the line.
Batteries don't like AC voltage. If it is there, you may be in for replacing both the alternator and the battery, though the battery can sometimes be coaxed back to life.
