Great work, I love stories like this.
When my expensive vacuum cleaner started acting strange, shooting sparks out of the back, I realized the motor brushes were shot. Local vacuum shop was very condescending when I asked for just the brushes, saying they needed to put in a new $320 motor as I could never fix it. They blew it by tipping me off that the square brushes needed to be run at slow speeds until they adapted the curve of the armiture. Well I got brushes from an electrical supply store, installed them and ran the motor on my workbench with a McGyvered dimmer switch hooked up to some romex cable and plug to run the motor slowly for break in. Reassembled and its been running fine for 7 years now. A $6 fix and one hour of work.
Your motor can be run slowly during break in using the speed control switch on the dash.
