Daughter's 1999 SE(4) (119k miles, not sure if original turbo) was experiencing some surging when the engine was warm and car stopped in drive. She also said it was making some noise and not accelerating well in 1st.
I replaced all the 4mm (5/32") vacuum hose I could find, took for test drive.
In the addition, all seemed great, started right up, nice and smooth.
When got on the road, applied some gas, could hear some slight rattling noise, and some whining. Assumed the turbo was having problems, as this could be duplicated everytime put some load on the engine (this car does not have a boost gauge). After warmed up, stopped at light, experienced some surging. I wanted to jump on I-69 make run to Home Depot, figured I'd be OK.
Five minutes later, saw puff of smoke out rear, slowed down some, then 30 seconds later, started loosing power, started dumping all kinds of smoke. Engine lights came on, engine died. Pulled to exit ramp, had towed home.
Pulled turbo, the impellor was shot, had loosened on shaft, vanes rubbed housing. Perhaps that was the surging, when the impellors were dragging and boost increased.
She was previously driving the car. When I test drove, I could hear suspect turbo noise.
You're not hearing anything unusual?
When her's gave, it also dumped over a quart of oil into the intercooler and hosing, made the replacement much more lengthy.
