As a customer you look to control your costs as best you can. The same holds true for a dealer. While not being in the automobile business, My business is industrial machinery. I have had the experience where a customer has bought parts from another source or sometimes from me with the caveat that it may not solve their problem and elecrical/electronic parts are not returnable as they may be damaged on installation from system problems or installation error. It may take considerably more time to solve a problem that was tinkered with by someone not intimately familiar with the systems. I think the dealer was reasonable with their charges. If the componet in question were to fail the dealer may be liable to replace a component that may have been questionable to start with. Being a steady customer at a dealer often has the benefit of them giving you the benefit of the doubt when a judgement call is due.
