location sounds like oil pressure switch

The locatio you describe (behind the engine by the alternator sounds like the oil pressure sender/switch. Mine left a lot of oil all over the bottom of the engine and back toward the exhaust. I was told they leak
when the car is running. I think you should try that first as it is cheap. Not sure if that is the "seperator" you describe.
