Well, thanks for the mine of information Anders. It s both frightening and humbling. Maybe i should get a simpler car, or a bicycle?
One thing it tells me, is that the system is very sensitive, even to a tiny leak. (ref what you say about pinching off the vacuum hose).
So on the basis of that I have ordered a whole new set of hoses, (with new check valves).
As for testing, I was thinking a way to gauge the tiny pressure differences (unless you have the fancy gauge that you mention) would be to make a manometer; just a simple U tube of plastic hose and a little colored water. 1 psi would be a about 2ft. Also a small constriction at one end would work as a damper. I have yet to get the tubing store; will let you know if it works.
I start to wonder if there are other hoses that could contribute to an effective leak of the PCV system? Like the little vacuum hose you mention? (I put a clamp on mine, and on the throttle body connection of the upper PCV return). Some thing from the EVAP or the BCV plumbing or dipstick, maybe?
LAst thought for the day: as this is such an endemic problem, and my car is old and has so many hoses, what about just putting in a small electric vacuum pump, and let it suck from the crank case hose and dump into the intake, between the filter and mass flow sensor? After all my main symptom is an oil leak right now. But it seem lot of car have similar woes.
Oh yeah, Justin, I did read, in the WIS I think, that the PCV box was where it was in order to prevent I icing, so same probably applies to hoses too
regards, and many thanks
chris
