I was fighting an rough idle, stalling problem for awhile after replacing an engine in a 9-3. Had a helper doing the engine swap for me due to time constraint (he has more years in the business than me on Saab's and Volvo's).

Checking the air mass correction value showed a positive of around 10-14 both at idle and driving so I started with checking the air mass meter and clean out the filament. That brought down the correction value to 8-10 but the idle issue was still present.
So I thought that the air mass meter was bad and installed a new one. That brought the value down to -20 at idle which was more in line with my thinking but I could still not find the problem and not hear any hissing from a vacuum leak.
Unplugged the brake booster pipe from intake but didn't change anything.

Finally hooked up my smoke machine and low and behold, he hadn't gotten the turbo intake pipe right and it was cocked sideways allowing a pretty big vacuum leak before the turbo.
Secured the pipe properly and everything was fine.
The leak was big enough to not emit any hissing noises but small enough to not set any fault codes or bad running except a disturbed idle. Car even completed readiness after driving for awhile.

And that is why I'm hesitant to have someone working for me. I know how difficult that pipe can be to get seated properly and always make sure it is right and he does too but???

Also, smoke machine is just as an important tool with today's cars since smaller and smaller vacuum leaks can disturb system and throw them into a hizzy fit unlike the older cars from 80s and 90s.
