I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. If you remove the idler pulley then route the belt onto all the other pulleys you can then pull the idler onto the stub shaft and put the bolt in. I too used the Contiental belt. It made a thump with every revolution, that with some other posts led me to a different belt. I purchased a Gator back at Autozone. It went on easier and runs quiet. On looking at the belts the conti is slightly thicker which may be a reason why it was more difficult to install. The thump may have been caused by the difference in texture where the belt brand name and size were printed but I thought that the peace of mind was worth it to have a belt that didn't make a funny noise.
