For many years all Saab engines have been equipped with turbos. I consider this a plus since the efficiency and performance is greatly enhanced. Durability is just not a problem, modern lubricants and improved cooling have eliminated the old "coking" problem in the turbo bearing. If you follow this board you'll rarely, if ever, hear about a turbo failure in a Saab 9-5!
As for the 4 vs V6, drive both and take your pick, they are both reliable engines. Much has been said about the belt driven cams on the V6, but they have not proven to be a problem so long as they are replaced at 60K mile intervals. Remember a load of very prestige iron has belt driven cams; including Audi, Lexus and Infinity. In fact, on high milage engines (100K+) you are more likely to have problems with chains and tensioners than with belts.
I have a V6 with 44K miles so far. No problem with the engine at all, it runs better than a new one since it is well broken in.
