Follow-up time: When I said that the sprocket was rotated by 30 degrees, it would have been more accurate to say it "CAME TO REST" off by 30 degrees - the scoring inside the sprocket made it obvious that the crank had spun by at least a full revolution (ouch!). I can't believe such a tiny sliver of iron is all that prevented this from happening - I've seen stronger shaft keys in a lawnmower! So ya, in the process, the intake valves in #1 and #6 got wacked and bent so they wouldn't seat. Naturally, that's one in each head. Anyway, after pulling it all apart and replacing the 4 bad valves and all new seals, it's back up and running - pretty sweet I might add; it seems quieter and smoother than before. Cost me about $900 bucks; that includes new water pump, timing belt kit, thermostat, serpentine belt, and new exhaust mid section (free shipping!). If I can sell the timing belt tool kit for most of what I paid for it, maybe the net will be closer to $700 - not too bad; still less than a new timing belt from a shop.
Bonus: I've owned this car since new and for years it's had a mysterious slow loss of coolant; now I know that the thermostat had a small leak - replaced that. Also that small oil leak came from the read head gasket and lastly, one that doesn't make sense - the SID has had a few bad columns for a few years now, especially when it's cold out. There was always at least one column out. Since I put this back together a week or so ago, ALL the columns work every time I start the car - even on sub freezing mornings! The battery was diconnected for a month or so but I can't see why that should matter. It's probably just my imagination.
In closing - CHANGE YOUR WATER PUMP WHEN YOU CHANGE THE TIMING BELT!
