Our 9-5 wagon was totalled by a drunk a couple years ago while we were stopped at a light.
The first offer by our insurance company was a joke: when pressed for how they came up with such a figure, the claims agent sent us a copy of some document they used: it compared our vehicle - loaded, with virtually every option, and in top shape inside and out - with one they found somewhere else in our state with nearly 50K more miles and half the installed options!
I simply "declined" their offer politely but firmly, which apparently caught the agent somewhat unprepared. I also called my local agent - who sold me the policy - and read her the riot act. They came back with 30% more a couple days later. I then pointed out the options they had missed (I actually went out and took photos of the relevant details!) and they gave me a bit more. In the end it was a fair price, but I was more than a little upset - but not surprised - at how we came to terms.
Personally, I believe that EVERY auto insurance company's goal is to get rid of claims as quickly as possible. They don't really care about anything else. We were good customers - no claims at all until this one - and I'm sure our clean record had something to do with the end result.
YMMV. If it were me, I wouldn't let them take the car until the settlement was complete.
