You can drive the car with the turbo leaking a little bit for quite some time. I drove my 2001 V6 for about 7k miles before the small puffs turned into a James Bond smoke screen while I was driving. When I had mine fixed I had my indy take it out and have it sent off to be rebuilt by a reputable turbo place with all the right tools. It turned out the little metal seal on the exhaust side of mine had broken off and was rattling around in the housing!! So they had to replace the housing. My total bill with labor was $1500, which isn't too bad for a V6 turbo, but it meant having my car off the road for a couple weeks which was painful. If you're thinking you can DIY there are some decent rebuilt turbos on eBay for <$500 every once in a while. It's too bad; a couple weeks ago someone was selling a BRAND NEW OEM Saab V6 turbo for $350. They obviously had no idea what they had.
It's not good for your catalytic converter, but if the cat is in decent working order it should be able to handle it. I'm willing to bet you had a DI cassette failure that messed up the cat. ?
