I guess I do not understand how you are sparing the brakes by shifting to neutral when you see a red light ahead and then shift to neutral. You are then using the brakes only to come to a stop, rather than a combination of brakes and transmission. Even though an automatic is not quite as efficient as a manual as far as engine braking is concerned, you still get some braking through the transmission,so what is the sense of being in neutral? You also create a potential safety question in that if you need to boogie in a hurry to avoid a car that might all of a sudden be heading towards you,you need to remember to shift into gear, whearas with the trans in gear, you just step on it.I see no advantage to this, and as John D says below, you must be putting more wear and tear on the gear selector mechanism.
