2000 SE Wagon with about 134,000 miles.
In Aug. 2009 my alternator shorted out and needed replacing. I was lucky and found a good shop in Green Bay who put in a remanufactured part (at my request).
In about December of this year I started to notice my dash lights pulsing. A good independent mechanic here in Albany thinks it is the alternator diode. I see from this web-site that remanufactured alternators are suspect.
For a few days I played with the idea of replacing the car. Then I decided to take the Dave Ramsey approach. I shouldn't buy more car than I can afford to pay cash for and save the payments to an account that I can later use to upgrade when the time comes. I can afford to pay cash for about $4-5K. It occurs to me that for a $700-$800 alternator repair, I will not find a better used car than my own 9-5. So, I am going to fix it and keep it.
