My 2 cents worth:
I highly recommend buying a small digital voltmeter. They cost from $2.00 to $10.00. Buy one on eBay or go to a store like Harbor Freight. Or Google "digital mustimeter"
You need one even if you have only a screw drive and a pair of pliers in your tool kit.
You set the range to Volts DC. Put the wires on the battery. With engine off you should get 12 volts on the digital read out it could be a bit higher like 12.5. Start the engine and you should have 14 volts. That is the alternator charging the battery. It is as simple as that.
Bring it to Autozone or Sears or .....and they will do the same thing. But why would you not do it at home? And that meter will last for years and and can be used on any car. And at home there is not a mechanic stanidng there trying to sell you something.
