it's not hugely hard, but you have to work very carefully.
You do need a GOOD spring compressor (a 3-point one if you can), and preferably an air tool to make the job go faster. It takes some time and effort to ratchet down the spring. Be sure to compress the spring evenly: you are doing something that's actually fairly dangerous and you don't want the compressed spring to come loose. It can be lethal! A large vise can come in handy to hold the strut when compressing the spring.
Also, you may need an air wrench to loosen the top nut. Compress the spring to take the pressure off the bearing first.
If you're simply replacing the entire strut it's not nearly as complicated (or as hard or as messy) as if you are doing an insert. Still, I'd take pictures all along the way.
