deform when you use them, as the self-locking nuts do. If you look closely at a new one, you'll see the hole is more triangular in shape than perfectly round. The triangle part conforms to the round threads, but it applies that much more force on the threads to keep the nut from backing off. But when you back it off, they don't "spring back" enough to apply the same self-locking action a second time.
Also, the resistance of the self-locker to tightening is a factor (perhaps a small one, but...) in the torque when you tighten the nut. If you re-use a nut, you may be applying more torque to the nut, and therefore more preload to the bearings than is specified.
Basically, it's a $5 part that gets replaced oh, once in every 100,000 - 200,000 miles...
