Scott, the thing is that basic engine design is unchanged for well over 110 years. Every engine, from the Pinto to the Bentley uses the exact same tin/lead lined thinwall bearings and is subject to the exact same propensity to fail when certain events challange the limits of the bearing's ability to keep metal from metal. And I'm not kidding about the Pinto and the Bentley both using the exact same bearing technology. Even the main bearing and rod bearing diameters are dictated not by what you pay for the car but by the physics of rotating mass. That's why almost all cars of similar displacement have similar bore and stroke, as well as nearly identical journal diameters.
All the fancy OBD II bullswish in the world doesn't change this reality. One thing the OBD II can't tell you is you spun a bearing. That's like the most important thing to know if you spun a bearing. But the OBD II sure will prevent you from passing inspection even if you have a good running car.
