Brake job turned bad - need input

I had front rotors and brake pads changed on my 9-5 Aero. My neighbour did the job as I saw him do several for his friends. He found 1 cracked caliper (131kmiles)so I got a new one and he swapped that as well. Now the brake feel is very mushy and the pedal need at least 2" of travel before the car stops ok. He bled the brakes starting from the rear - 4 times- with DOT4 fluid- and couldn't get the pedal feel and break power to improve. He spent at least 8 hours on this and I feel bad for the car being screwed up and his ego. I noticed the exterior side break pads only contact the rotors on about 1/8" of their surface, they are positionned on an angle from the rotors and he insist there is no way he could have reversed them because they're handed. I don't know what to do next because the car is rather unsafe to drive.
THe car is not pulling on one side when I apply the brakes.
I'm thinking maybe the master cylinder went bad when he bled the system. There's also an annoying rubbing noise from the front left and it's not from the shield apparently. We cleared it from the rotor.
What a disappointing evening! I'd like to be able to give him a few pointers before I get the car to a professional. I gave him the job because I didn't have time to do it myself...
-Are the pads really handed and no reverse install is possible?
- Can the nmaster cylinder be damaged by bleeding brakes?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Eric
