Ideas for high temperature readings?? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 10:49:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Early last week I had a situation where I experienced very sluggish acceleration due to what felt like transmission slipping. It happened twice within one day and during the second event I noticed the engine temp gage was reading very close to the red zone. Outdoor temps were in the upper 90's and I was in construction traffic (slow stop and go) both times.
I was leaving on vacation to Seattle the next day so Tuesday of this week I installed a new thermostat, new temp sensor, new coolant, and new upper radiator hose. All parts I had lying in my garage for future installation. Since the trany felt as if it was slipping, possibly due to high temperature readings messing with the transmission ECU, I also drained and re-filled the transmisison.
Wednesday everything was perfect. Thursday I drove to Lordstown OH and back in 95+ temperatures with no apparent problem. Upon my return and before going home I stopped at a local store to return an item then continued home. Part of this trip was short expressway, followed by a couple of miles of 45mph suburban driving. The car ran fine the whole trip but as I was nearly home I noticed the temp gage needle was again above the horizontal position. No difficulties with driveability this time.
I parked the car in my driveway and noted the sound of the cooling fan(s) running but I failed to visually verify if one or two fans were operating.
High temps, high humidity, moderate traffic speeds, A/C on Max, no driveability issues. Is there a problem? If so, where else would you look? Are fans relays a weak point? Can I "fool" the car into activating both fans to verify proper operation?
I am looking for ideas. TIA
