Another total loss posting, pointers wanted!

Hi,
My wifes 125,000 miles 2002 9-5 linear wagon was rear ended a few weeks ago.
We have gone through the other drivers ins so far, and their person called today to say it will be a total loss.
Their current local (San Diego) valuation, done by a 3rd party is $5427.
Shop repair est is $200 less than that. I guess the loss is because they worry about hidden damages arising, pushing it over the vheicle value.
We had a claim in with our ins. comapny (thought it would be better to go through the other parties ins. first), and just called them to send someone to look at it, hoping that they are more sympathetic to us.
We are waiting to hear from the Total Loss department, presumably with an offer.
So does anyone have any advice on getting the vehicle value up? Or what to expect from the "Total Loss Dept"? My wife is most concerned about not have a salvage title.
kbb.com lists it as $7395 for retail, with pp about what the 3rd party came up with.
