I love the wagons too! I'm not the final word on this, but the 02 and newer cars were probably best if you want an auto, as they have the 5 speed tranny.
I have a 2000 Aero with damn near 200k miles and everything that usually breaks long in the rear view. Mine's a 5 speed, which is fun and seems to better the autos on freeway mpg, but the 2nd gear is starting to go, and they are a horrific expense when the clutch or its hydraulics go bad.
I think 02 cars have more hp and some other conveniences the older ones don't. My saab indy tells me the 03 and up cars seem to have more expensive little problems than the older cars, and he warned me against the V6 with its expensive timing belt and turbo problems.
I drive my car fairly hard at times, pull a boat with it occasionally, and long road trips are a breeze. The aeros are not as quiet inside I think due to the bigger tires and different suspension, but they also have the HK premium sound with subwoofer, which everyone oogles about.
Yeah its a wagon, but in almost 10 years, I've had only one ticket in all the very spirited driving I do, as apposed to our BMW which never misses notice, and uses more gas...
