BIG can of worms on this one...

Washing/Waxing exercises are very individualistic and opinionated. But some facts (not opinions) still remain. Fact 1 is that some waxes work well with factory paints and poorly with others. Fact 2 is that using automated car washes will micro-scratch your paint. Fact 3 is that no single wax is capable of cleaning/polishing/waxing.
I am extremely anal about how I wash/wax my cars. Here is a brief summary:
1. 3+ Gallons of luke warm water + cap-full of Maguires Gold Class soap (never use dish soap)
2. Use 3 sheepskin mits (1 top/sides, 1 sides below edging, 1 wheels)
3. Use <----> motion (not circles) from front to back of car.
4. Dry using 100% cotton towels with tags cut off*
5. Dry using P21S brand absorber.
6. Use 3M Imperial Hand Glaze and Foam applicator to lightly clean paint and fill in micro-scratches using Step 3 technique from above.
7. Use MicroFibre towels to remove cleaner and buff.
8. Use Blitz One Grand Carnuba Paste and foam applicator to lock in shine (use step 3 technique, again).
* I just lay the towels flat on the surface of my cars rather than "wiping" the water off. This way the towels do not scratch the paint.
These products I suggested are used on my BMW. I have not had a chance to use them on my Saab, yet. But these products are more compatible to most paint than Maguires, Zymol, and P21S.
Here are some good links to companies/products I recommend:
