The current key placement is only a marketing gimmick which has far outlived its usefullness (and yes, I owned one of the early 99's).
For those wags who claim "safety", well, the current key placment makes it very easy for a passenger to accidentally (or on purpose) turn the vehicle off while motoring. This has happened to some of the Saabnet users. Hardly safe in my opinion.
I think you are correct about the future usefulness of keys. In the late 60's Saab put the key where they did as a clever and innovative solution to a problem. If the current crop of Saabites would allow the _real_ spirit of Saab to surface and not just to cling to anachronistic quirks we might have some really innovative cars.
