1999 SE with smoking turbo - options advice please

So, for the first time in 6yrs, I'm without a Saab to drive. My 9000 Aero is down after a skirmish with a curb and my spare car that I recently picked up, a 1999 9-5 SE Automatic with 200K miles has just started smoking badly.
The smoke happens if I accelerate to, let's say 45mph and then let off the gas; smoke billows out the back james bond style. The turbo makes boost, no noticeable oil leaks underneath yet, but I'm assuming this means the turbo is on the early side of dying.
My question is this; should I invest the ~$250 in parts to R&R the turbo with rebuilt parts?
It's not such a huge job for me and I've just recently removed everything around the turb to replace a cracked/broken power steering pump bracket. I'm just concerned about potential sludge issues, the struts/shocks that need to be replaced, the brakes, etc.
This is, after all, supposed to be a spare loaner car. I'm just not accustomed to giving up.
Thoughts on the turbo rebuild aspect? Also, which turbo is it? GT17?
