Jay: We probably agree on a lot more here than meets the eye. I paid near list for my first 9-5 when it first came out. That was the going rate then, driven by supply and demand. True, Saab is offering money in the trunk right now to both move iron amd get new buyers into the fold. The percentage of depreciation is calculated not on the arbitrary list price, but on the actual out the door average price that customers pay. When you look at the numbers that way, SAab astill has more than average depreciation, but it's not nearly as ugly.I still feel that depreciation is the one factor keeping Saab away from much higher recognition among buyers of luxury brands. Their CSI scores hold up very well in their category, and they are still a good value.Back to your original supposition, what should YOU do today if you want to buy one? If the rest of the market is getting the discount or rebate/incentive,whatever, you should as well. If you make an offer to a dealer and are serious, they will take the bait, and there is no reason why you should not then get good service.
By the way, the business model you cite for Mercedes as one other companies are trying to emulate is a bit flawed. As EMrcedes has started selling SUV's and low ind coupes that compete with Camrys and Celicas, don't think that that class of buyer is not arm wrestling with the Mercedes dealer the way they are used to doing with other dealers. MB is no longer the high end exclusive boutique name it used to be in this country. Everyone and his mother has one now.
