Happy to say my 1999 9-5 SE is back in service after replacing the old fuel pump, which failed last Sunday with no warning. The car ran fine for a few blocks after starting and then completely died. No sound from fuel pump when turning on the ignition, and no response to banging on the fuel tank. I also had 12 VDC showing up at the fuel pump power connector. No hint of impending pump failure that I was ever aware of.
Our valuable 9-5 BB colleague LesH lives near me, and happened to have a new Bosch/Walbro raw pump on-hand. Together with great site sponsor eEuroparts shipping me a parts order out the same afternmoon that I placed the order, all is back in place and working perfectly. I had ordered a new main o-ring seal, fuel line right angle connectors (in case mine broke coming out of the tank fitting... but they did not) and the steel fitting retainer that was part of a recall, just in case one of the yellow plastic tab retainers broke. It didn't, but I put the metal bracket on anyhow.
Removing the pump/fuel gauge sender assembly from the tank was easy since LesH also had a proper spanner tool to undo the locking ring. I could have fabricated something to do that job, but soooooo much better just grabbing the tool! Replacing the old pump cartridge was a matter of careful partial disassembly and replacing a semi-rigid fuel discharge line from the old pump outlet to a tee nearby. It went back in slick and quick, and started up right away.
Very happy that I don't have to worry about a fuel pump failure now for as long as I am likely to have the car!
Thanks again to all who chimed in when I first asked about this last Sunday!
