I'm at about 59k miles on my '04 Aero and something associated with the serpentine belt is making a lot of noise when it's cold, so I'm going to do the belt job soon. I have a couple questions though, and would really appreciate some opinions.
My car has the long belt right now. I do not want to switch to the short belt for fear of any additional vibration. But I don't want to replace the GD center pulley. I'll do the whole tensioner assembly (I think that's what's making the rattling sound) and the upper idler pulley. They don't look too bad to replace. Do you think I could get another 60k out of the center pulley if I just leave it and wrap a new belt over it?
The Townsend DIY site says removing the upper motor-mount bracket makes it easier to do the job. They say you can just remove it, and WIS doesn't mention supporting the engine either. Seems to me like the engine should be supported from underneath. But I only have one jack and if it's holding up the side of the car so I can have the wheel off, I can't put it under the engine.
So, in summary:
1). Can I get another 60k out of the center idler pulley? Worst case scenario it fails I guess?
2). Can I take the engine mount bracket off without supporting the engine?
Thanks!
