I had one rotor that was rusted tight to the hub. Replacing the wheel with the lug bolts only finger tight, then doing a serires of "S curves" in the driveway finaly broke it loose.
That hub also experienced the first wheel bearing failure so there may have been an "out of spec" condition too regarding maching tolerances from the factory that contributed to both problems.
The rotor retention screw is there just to keep the brake rotor from falling off the car on the assembly line prior to the wheels being bolted in place. Likewise, it keeps the rotors from falling off when the wheels are removed during tire rotations.
