Yeah, air mass meter problems is the most likely culprit leaning out the fuel mixture during long accelerations creating too much pinging.
Even though possible, it is difficult to look at air mass meter correction values using the Tech 2 here in LA traffic. You have to get out on the freeway and it is still difficult to find a stretch clear of traffic (and CHP) to both accelerate steady enough and for long enough time to see the value dropping.
That connected with a bad tank of gas or low octane might be enough to bring it over the edge.
