Hello all,
Just got some terrible news today...
A little background:
Bought a 2001 9-5 Aero used 140K about 6 months ago. PO said that it was consuming a lot of oil and needed a new turbo (1 quart per 700 miles). So I replaced the turbo (with the help of the good people on this board).
That did not change the oil consumption at all. Still 1qt/700mi. Absolutely no blue smoke out of the exhaust (that I notice), no drips or external leaks, car runs perfectly and gets great gas mileage, no coolant leaks, runs quietly. Updated the PCV, tried almost everything under the sun... everything pointed to something internal.
So, I took it into Mile Hi in Denver today and my worst fears came true.
When he told me I was totally beside myself with grief because I truly love this car and I can't afford to fix it if their diagnosis is correct.

So we did a compression test on the 4 cylinders:
Cylinder 1 = 190
Cylinder 2 = 190
Cylinder 3 = 180
Cylinder 4 = 150

So I am assuming that this points to a bad piston ring if I am not mistaken in Cylinder 4.
I just wanted to check with you guys to see if it could possibly be something else. This Saab is MY 01 and its VIN falls within the models which were affected by the head bolt torquing issue. To my knowledge the head bolts have not been re-torqued (PO wasn't sure). Could it possibly be a head gasket issue where oil vapor is leaking through a head gasket gap at Cylinder 4?

The mechanic recommended to just keep driving the car and adding oil every time I fill up the tank. Is there any danger in this? Will it cause (more)damage to the engine over time, or lead to catastrophic failure?
Could it possibly be fixed with a new head gasket?
I wish we could have found a smoking gun. But alas just some low compression. Any of your feedback or advice is very much appreciated.
Thanks
PS. I attached an image. It is hard to think of such a nice shiny piece of metal and leather as not salvageable.
