I am also looking at the A4 compared to the 9-5. Just so you know where I'm coming from, we have owned two 9000 CSE's - the last one since we bought it new in 1994. I would really like to buy another Saab. The 9000 hatchback is the most practical and fun to drive car we have ever owned. Let's compare the "upscale VW" to the "upscale Opel/Saturn" in the auto version:

* The A4 CVT has the smoothest auto tranmission I have ever driven. This auto almost matches the A4 manual for gas mileage.

* A4 3.0 CVT - 0 to 60: 6.9
9-5 Aero Auto - 0 to 60: 7.8

* Despite being a smaller car, the driving position in the A4 fits me better. I am 6'1" with size 14 shoes. The seat in the A4 is almost as comfortable as that in the Saab. I can't move my foot from the brake to the accelerator in the 9-5 with catching it on the brake pedal - so I will have to modify my $38K car's pedals.

* Side curtin airbags for the rear passengers are optional in the A4. Not available in the 9-5.

* The A4 has some of the finest fit and finish materials in the class. Audi even knows how to make aluminum trim look good in the cheapest version of the A4. The first thing several 9-5 Aero buyers are talking about is how to get rid of that cheap looking fake metal dash.

Any pluses for the 9-5 other than 2 more inches of leg room for the rear seat passengers?
