Saab put everything into the electronic "guts" of the all-in-one keys. Transponder and remote. I know this because:
a) in the original keys, which were separate from the remote, you could actually remove the little chip from the key (a little thing about 3mm x 3mm x 10-12mm), once you got the head apart.
b) in the all-in-one keys, there is only one thing - the "guts" that goes into that key head. and the only replaceable parts on that are the battery, seal and maybe the rubber buttons.
c) I have a complete set of "guts" - not in a key head - that is already programmed to my car, just waiting for the backlog of key blanks to get sorted at Saab, so I can order my fourth key (that was fun to program, too).
The banana WILL work on the later cars, but it is only the remote functions. But it's pretty pointless, since you have to have the huge key anyway, and you can't get later key shafts with earlier key styles. With the wrong shaft, it won't fit the lock cylinder, and you won't be able to turn the key, even though the car "accepts" the key.
