Chances are the bearing ran dry due to age, seized and shattered the pulley. After it cooled it was fine. If the bearing spins freely it means it is dry. It should turn with some resistance. With a metal pully, the bearing will seize and grind down the mount on the timing cover and cause hundreds of dollars in damage instead if $50-100...but if it makes you feel better....
