I agree diy exhaust work is no fun. Without a lift, it's a lot of work, lying on your back lifting heavy stuff under the car.
That said, I got tired of having bits + pieces break randomly + getting charged a fair bit to fix them. I haven't done one on a 9-5, but for a 2.1L c900, I did cat back + cat for <$350 parts shipped to my door from eeuro: about the same as the cost of getting a shop to weld a new muffler into the existing problematic system... got the old rusty system off in <30 minutes with a dremel. Now I have a new working exhaust. But installation is a little tricky: getting it all aligned nicely. It's not quite lego... there's a bit of muscle + tweaking required... really would be way easier with a lift!
all this is to say that I don't necessarily disagree with dmz789qqq... Maybe the best bet is if you know a rural mechanic who'd be happy to do the install pretty cheap, get the parts for him + go for it.
