No, it's not possible to be 180° off if the crank mark is lined up and the cam sprockets too against their correct marks.
Just to check, did you figure out the sprocket orientation on each cam shaft? So that you know that 1-2 sprockets can be set wrong and that the 3-4 sprockets can be wrong?
And that you used #1 cam shaft as being the one closest to fire wall.
Since the heads were off and lifters most likely empty I don't think over pumped up lifter would be the cause but if you do a timing belt only and rotate the engine backwards too many times, you force oil into the lifters at that can leave them over pumped and allowing valves to stay open.
