Thanks for the thoughts. I had taken the sprockets off and set them down in a way that made the re-install obvious but they were moved by a friend by the time I got the heads back. That being said, I looked at each one for any indication of where the pin from the cam had been and each sprocket had a slightly worn/shinier spot on one side or the other. I did not pull the back head off, the friend did, but I know when I pulled the front one off everything was lined up and those valves were completely closed. When I went to reinstall everything the front cams were still lined up as the intake side was never removed (other than the cap in order to install the new seal). The rear head was way off and when lined up the cam was right at that tipping point where it wanted to move on its own.
Obviously I'll need to get back into this mess. Anders, I was reading that 1-2 and 3-4 were interchangeable but it seemed to make sense that the 1,2,3,4 markings corresponded to the cam it was being used on, if that makes sense. After checking for those "shiny" spots, I realized the number markings near the center of each sprocket and noticed the numbers corresponded to the way I was installing them. Again, I don't see how I would do the job differently.
I did not rotate the engine counter clockwise the again, my friend says he "may" have, but that would have been before we removed the heads.
Thanks again.
Dan
