Hi guys,
So I had the car checked out. I don't know if its the mounting bills that are causing my frustration or the lack of flexibility on the part of the indy but anyhow: the verdict is a leaking coolant bypass valve and hoses. the indy noted that I need the whole assembly (I have 165K on the hoses and about 70K on the valve itself from a previous job I did myself).
The quote was $432 for new valve and hoses, $51 for a valve kit (?), $40 for coolant and $320 for labor: $843 total. I said no thanks and had my co-worker drop me off so I have a car to drive home with.
I assumed that the hoses are infact leaking (infact, when I leaned in the other day to check I did see what seemed like a wet hose but who knows whether that's from the valve spraying or dumping) and called Goldwing. Id ordered a valve with all associated hoses for $75 + $10 to ship: $85 total.
It may not go 80K but it will at least do a year (it's warrantied for parts failure, obviously I'd eat the labor again) and should do just fine.
What's with the $320 labor total for the BPV? That probably does include coolant flush since I'm running 30% water now, but still... four hours?
Is there significantly more labor involved in attaching the valve WITH all the associated hoses?
BTW, I did the valve myself - without the hoses - last time with a pair of clamp pliers. I have a shop by my house that's not Saab specific that should be able to tackle the job and I'll keep on boosting for a a few more months.
If I can somehow get a hold of it maybe I'll bring a printout of the job (sans hoses though) to help guide the new guy. Will probably do the larger oil leak at crankcase then too. Skip the CV boot for now.
Also -- and if you've gotten this far, THANKS! -- how much coolant do I need to buy off eeuro to flush and refill the sytem? two jugs?
Thanks guys, with some help and sound advice, I'll be able to roll for a few more months.
