I have also weighed the benefits of not having a bypass valve to fail vs less efficient cooling in south Texas in the summer. I replaced the bypass valve myself last time for the just the cost of the part and my labor. In balmy Europe where people are out sunbathing when the temp is in the 60's not having a bypass valve is probably OK. When the temp hits 95-100 consistently in the summer in the south, maybe not.
