HELP -- synthetic

I just picked up my (new to me) '99 Saab 9-5, has 30k on it, is a Saab certified car (yes, I love it, it is the first car in probably 20 years that I am genuinely excited about). I have been using synthetic oil in my cars for years. Toyota now has 185000 mis, engine tight as a drum (I baby it)and also my Isuzu trooper drinks synthetic. I am very happy with both of those cars.
But I've read a lot of stuff on this site that says not to use synthetics on the Saab...I even talked to a Saab mech who says not to use synthetics, just change oil every 3k (I change my synthetic and filter every 5k anyway--might be overkill, but...). Is there something different about Saab engines I don't know about? I've had very good luck with Mobile 1, 10W-30 in the other vehicles and am a big proponent of the synthetics.
Also, I've heard that if I use synthetic, I should go to a 20W50 or at least a 15W-40.....Anyone with any experience regarding synthetics and viscosity?
THX in advance
