As originally designed, the Aisin automatic transmission in the OG 9-5 2002- uses "Esso T-4", a unique fluid specially designed for that transmission.
Since the merger of Exxon and Mobil, the "Esso" lubricant business has been moved to the Mobil label, and Mobil's designation is "3309". Whether you purchase Toyota Type T-IV, Saab 3309, Mobil 3309, etc., it's always the same stuff. Now a Mobil 1 a/t fluid claims to meet the 3309 specs - well, they should know, shouldn't they? They make the original.
As for the benefit of a synthetic vs. mineral fluid - note that the base oil in a/t fluid provides viscosity, bulk flow to remove debris and operate the valves and servo pistons, and heat transfer. All the rest of the functions are in the additive package. The "black" in the fluid is wear particles, possibly some oxidized a/t fluid. Having synthetic base fluid won't stop the "black" from happening any more than synthetic oil stops the black from happening to engine oil. That said, synthetic base oil might have inherently better viscosity control for better cold start performance. High temperature is set by the engine coolant temperature via the radiator heat exchanger, so I wouldn't expect different warm-engine performance from the fluid.
