What is the torque arm doing?

The torque arm connects to the lower front face of transmission and to the chassis behind the bumper.
I will be replacing the torque arm in two autobox 9-5 Aero Wagons. The rubber element is very compressed, showing a large gap. This means that the engine can deflect significantly before the torque arm does anything.
The new rubber elements in replacement arms have large built in gap spaces.
What is the point of this floppy design? We do know that more solid units create vibration at idle. Is the design meant to allow the torque arm to not take any load at idle? But with the torque imposed on the drivetrain with an automatic, is the vibration when stopped [in-gear] from the torque arm taking a load? If one goes into neutral or park, the vibration stops.
Any thoughts?
Tempted to experiment with one of the old mounts.
