1999 LPT I4 Smokes after turbo fail / replace Posted by jeff02 [Email] (#2992) [Profile/Gallery] (more from jeff02) on Fri, 8 Jul 2011 16:12:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just replaced a turbo in an 1999 LTP I4 with about 125K. Turbo failed with a quite a bit o smoke (I was told). After turbo replacement, strange smoking
1) It does not smoke until the engine warms up.
2) It does not smoke much (if at all) at idle
3) Will start smoking more when the car is diven, even a bit slowly.
4) Will stop smoking once the car is brought back to idel for a bit.
5) 20 minute after turbo install idle test had no smoke.
Blue smoke out the tail pipe.
Upon inspection, there is oil at the throttle body when the air inlet pipe is removed.
Can there be that much oil in the intercooler to cause this? On a V6, there was some oil / "poo" in the intercooler, but it smoked only a bit after the new turbo.
The intercooler has not been inspected yet, but will do so soon....
Can some sort of pressure in the base cause oil to be feed up through the turbo somehow? It still smokes when the oil cap is removed. This should take all pressure out of the base? Correct?
At the same time of the replacement, the PV6 was installed, but this was installed like others. This should be installed correctly. Will double check, but doubt this is the issue. Could it be?
Any other ideas before we go after the intercooler? Some head gasket issue?, but I double this because of oil at the throttle body. Engine is running very well. The only other thing is durting all of the testing we did get one P1300, misfire.
So the default diagnosis right now is bunch of oil in the intercooler.....
Thanks in advance for any help and ideas...
